Don't know what version of Word you're using, but in the view menu or ribbon or whatever it's called now, there is an option called footnote. In Word twenty oh three, this puts focus in the footnotes list and I am able to use the cursoring keys to read the text in whatever units I prefer--line, word, character. When I'm finished, I switch the view back to normal or print view. I cannot imagine Microsoft omitting that menu item. Worth a try.
