Hey, Richard.

If you have the em dash and en dash characters saved in your character
dictionary, try unchecking the include font check box for those two entries
and saving the character dictionary. If they are not in your character
dictionary, add them.

Type the em dash (That's mike dash) using your Word shortcut.
Put the Microsoft Word cursor on the character.
Route the mouse pointer to the cursor with the WE num pad insert num pad
plus sign key combination.
Press the WE exceptions dictionary hot key, control-shift-e, to open the WE
dialog, then arrow down the tree view to the dictionary item, right arrow to
open the tree node, then down arrow to character.
Because the mouse pointer is on the character, you do not need to type
anything in the original edit box, so tab to the replacement edit box and
type the phrase em dash. By the way. I have trouble distinguishing m as in
mike from n as in november, so I labeled mine mike dash.
Tab to the include font check box and uncheck it, then press alt-u to update
the entry.
Tab to the save button and get out of the WE control panel.

Repeat the steps for the november dash, but instead of closing the WE
control panel after saving the character dictionary, tab to the tree view
and get to the screen tree view item.
Open the tree node and down arrow to punctuation.
Make sure the miscellaneous item in the screen punctuation property page is
set to dictionary only.
Save your settings.
Now WE should read those characters.

Subject: Reading of Em and En Dash Characters

Apparently WE does not read en dash and em dash characters in the main
screen of Microsoft Word 2003. (This is using Windows XP.) WE does properly
identify the characters in the symbols dialog.

The reason I believe WE isn't announcing the character in the main screen is
that I've created a shortcut key to enter the em dash symbol into a
document. A sighted coworker has verified the em dash is present, but WE
only announces it as a dash.

Do GW staff or others have a solution that will allow WE to speak these
characters?
