You could download Word Viewer for those files. It's free.
You can't edit with it, but you can view them.
I would suspect you could copy the text in to something else maybe.

Honestly, the best way is with Word, since that's the program that creates
those types of files, and since Window-Eyes text accuracy in Word is quite
high. You can't edit doc/docx files in Notepad++ because they're not text;
they're a proprietary binary format, and would show up as garbage in a
text editor.
