Macafee is malware though, everyone knows that. <smile>.

Yes, quite right; the Microsoft Security Essentials says it's ok; my Macafee

I don't *think* it's malware, but that's just my guess.

Just beware, that a handful security software, does report
the NirCmd as malware. Doing a search on the matter on the
net, reveals a somehow mixed exprience. Some claim that the
whole suite of Nir software are performing malware actions.
Others claim it is all safe. I am not in a possition to tell
the one more correct than the other, but want to make you
aware that your security software might handle the NirCmd as
malware. If you still want it to run as Chip described, you
will have to make your security software ignore the NirCmd.
Again, not all security software makes any complain about the
Nir suite. So my above text, would only apply in case your
set of security would cause any interruption.

Hi Tim,
Not a WE app, but there is a free program you can search
for and download
named NirCmd. It allows you to use a commandline full of
options to
control
your sound card. Put it somewhere on your disk, and then create a
shortcut
to it in your startup group of your start menu (it's under "all
programs").
You may want to read through all the options, but if you
don't, here's the
commandline just to unmute your soundcard, and it will
execute each time
you
boot (you will need to put the full path in front of the
program name
below):
nircmd.exe mutesysvolume 0
hth,
Chip
