That's because you are using two different functions of Window-Eyes. The speak the word star radio buttons affect the keyboard echo, while the browse mode cursor, which is a Window-Eyes screen function, sees the asterisks. As you are typing, Window-Eyes is speaking the keys, but a sighted user watching you type in your password would see asterisks appearing on the screen. I think I just said that.
