Most likely, its to free up the keys for other functions.
Also, do keep in mind, you can press ctrl-Dash and Ctrl-Equals on the
number row, to turn table mode on and off respectively.
By the way, if you press space on a control or a link while in table
mode, it'll turn itself off automatically as well.
