For curiousity sake, I tried one of those Windows 8 Start Menu
replacements and didn't work at all with Window-eyes. I really can't
understand the need to make the Windows 8 menu resemble that of a
previous version anyway. Why not just make use of the INS-Tab which
re-organizes the start screen in the form of a treeview?

As for advantages yes quite a number of them.
First windows 8 is leaner and will run all of your programs faster then
seven. Bench mark tests have shown this again and again.
Also your going to find that windows 8 is a lot more stable then any other
windows operating system.
2. windows 8 app store aps. Getting news wether podcasts etc has never
been easyer on your computer. With windows8 app store apps you will find
lots of cool apps that use a simple web like interface to do all kinds of
cool things.
3. if you get your system in a bad way no more need to reinstall the
operating system. Just do a windows refresh it all speaks you can start it
with window-eyes and finish it with narrator. You will have to reinstall
your desktop programs but all your windows 8 app store apps will be there
and ready for you to use.
4. narrator works much better then it ever has under windows so if you need
to get up and running narrator is a good option and it works much better.
5. windows 8 has a really nice built in sapi 5 speech synthesizer.
I could say more but I think these are my top five good things about it.

I have been debating whether or not to purchase the Windows 8 upgrade disc.
Do you see any actual benefits over Windows 7? If so could you expand on
them please. The only other problem I have read about Windows
8 is that my current version of MS Office which is 2003 won't work with it.
I am a big enough nerd to want the latest and greatest but don't want to
take a step backwards by installing Windows 8. Thanks in advance.

That being said you are going to have quite the learning curve if you
switch operating systems. If you like your old laptop and want to give
it a refresh I would urge you to give windows 8 a try. There is
somewhat of a learning curve but it really is a great operating system
when you get used to it. I have tried it using nvda jaws and
window-eyes and right now window-eyes is leading the pack here. I am
quite impressed with how well window-eyes is working with windows 8.
For those who think windows 8 is just for touch I want to tell you it
works great for keyboard users and if you are using window-eyes you
can't help but love the support gw micro has put in.
