Could be with you on that one. Would be nice to hear if anyone has had that experience. I know, several manufacturers of such software, do claim their product to speed up your system.

After having tried a number of Fixing and Cleaning software - some accessible, others hardly doable for a blind user - I do find there is little to achieve, comes to speed up a computer. Some might argue, you just have to set up the software to be agresive enough. Yet doing so, it usually will clean out just about anything, and you end up with several applications on your system loosing their license keys or other important settings. I have had use of the cleaners, in very few situations, where I had trouble in uninstalling unwanted, or outdated, pieces of software. In those cases, I did have to manually edit the registry, to get rid of the obvious entries for the software in question. Then, after having done this manual job, I did run a cleaning software, so as to rid my registry of any further entries coresponding to the troublesome uninstallation. This approach, was that techie and time-consuming, I do not recommend it for most average users. For the rest of the time, I am about to tell the same experience as you Chip; my cleaner will report several handfuls of problems, you let it do its job, only to find that your computer runs exactly as smoothly or troubled as before. That is the moment, you find yourself stored away in the corner of your couch, eagerly scratching the bottom of your hair, wondering if this piece of cleaning software really did anything at all to your system, or if it was another way of making up computer entertainment. Smile. Sure, the software might be good at its job, and in given situations I do recommend giving it a try. But really speeding up your system, would take to fix the problem behind the stuff your cleaner finds. Usually, this is caused by malware and other unwanted activity on your system. Or, due to risky settings on your computer, like leaving it open for all kinds of cookies, whenever you browse the net.

Look at the cleaning software, as a vacuum cleaner in your home. It might be extremely effective, picking up even the least dust particle. Yet, if your grand-child always comes running in, without kicking off her shoes in the porch? How long will your home stay neat and clean? Only till next time she is coming in. Same goes on your computer. Do you leave it exposed for all kind of funny activity - knowingly or unknowingly - it won't take long to clutter up your system. In such cases, I do guess, the cleaner might have a certain effect on your system speed. But this will not last long. Next week, when your computer has had its time and fun, your registry and temporary file folders, are the same cluttered once again. Better go then is, to make sure things get cleaned out right away, or even better, don't get on your system first hand. A good anti-malware, combined with an anti-virus, will often prevent most such cases. Correctly setting up your security level in Internet Explorer or Firefox, could also prevent numerous cookies from being stored on your system. ;Many people claim that cookies are all harmless, yet removing them from your computer, I can highly confirm the system running faster and more smoothly. That will have to be the topic for another posting, though.

I also would like to hear from people who say "after I ran CCleaner, my
system was enormously faster ... it fixed a really bothersome problem I had
been having ... or any such improvement. I found, despite the claimed
number of "fixes", that my system runs the same as ever.

It actually has already been done. The CCleaner was part of the Ninite
installer - way up till something like two years ago. Then, all the
sudden,
it was removed from the Ninite site. I did contact the customer service at Ninite, and got a polite message in return, informing me that the CCleaner team had requested their software being removed from the Ninite installer.
Too bad, but that is the reason why it is not there. Somehow, I tend to
stop
using the CCleaner, simply due to the fact I am tired of having to update
the software numerous times a year, and every time having to deal with a
handful of junk. Not exactly a good reputation for a software, that claims
to help you keep your computer clean and optimized. If they were that
helpful, then why the junk. Eat our burger and get poisoned? :) And if
they
do shower us with that kind of junk as part of the software installation,
then I do question how much other "hidden" insecurity could be part of the CCleaner. Too bad, since it seems to be one of the few accessible cleaners
on the market.

But, I do have a feeling, the Ninite staff is not the ones to be addressed
here. Maybe a better idea would be, to get in touch with the staff behind
CCleaner directly, explaining how cumbersome it is to get hold of their
software, and what trash they deliver with it. Also, stressing the fact
that
their software is accessible, and therefore could be useful to the blind
community. And, maybe, asking them what other hidden stuff they include
in
their "cleaner".
