Good day everyone

I am currently with my third federal government department. I am using
Window-eyes, however our system might be some what different. There is no
government standard with respect to what adaptive technology is to be used. The
responsibility lies with the person needing to use the technology to determine
what works best for the job that needs to be done.

The advantage is that I am able to decide what tools I need to hold up my end
of the job description. The downside is that I need to do more work to make
sure that I select the best options in order to get the job done. Some people
may not have the time, resources, or familiarity to research what is available.

Last week I was at a meeting with the provincial government representatives and
I shared my reasons why I feel a standard for adaptive technology may not be in
the best interests of their employees. In my experience the best results come
from looking at what needs to be done, then selecting the best tools to
accomplish the tasks.

Our national service provider for people with a vision impairment has an
internal standard with respect to text to speech, magnification, and scanning.
They know that I am OK with them selecting an internal
internal suite of applications. They also know that I do not agree with them
pushing their organizational standards on to their clients. Their one size fits
all approach is too costly, restrictive, ineffective, and leaves people with
the impression that they are receiving some form of compensation based on
sales. It doesn't matter if this is true or not, because as we all know
perception is reality.
