But it's interesting that these issues do not happen when using JAWS. In
fact, one way to bring speech back with WE when it is lost, is to launch
JAWS. This brings WE back to life, and I can unload JAWS and go on with
WE, but this is a strange and rather expensive solution.

then you are haveing problems with i e not w e 8.
i have no lockups with any of my 3 computers with windows 7 32 or 64
bit.
maybe you have some add ons that are causeing the problem or tool bars
that got installed.

i think there is a way  to do a i e repair or set it back to factory
defaults. but this might delete your favorites list.
you could be haveing problems with damaged system files.
try openoing a command prompt from the accessories menu as administrator
and type in sfc /scannow to see if windows can repair any damaged files.

Upgrading to WE 8.1 has not helped the problem of my losing speech when
launching IE. In fact, it has made it worse.

Do yuou have any tool bars installed that would cause this strange
