Oh they'll focus on what they perceive to be shortcomings in the
competition, regardless of whether or not they actually are, but give the
pros at most a passing glance. I got all kinds of flack from my Joke Rehab
counselor when she found out I'd bought Window-Eyes on time payments with my
own money, because she of course knew little about the product. But rather
than learn about it she expressed doubts that it was as stable as JAWS. And
while JAWS was admittedly a fair product back when Henter-Joyce was still
Henter-Joyce, its quality took a definite dive after HJ got married to
Blazie Engineering. This is especially sad when one considers that each of
these companies at one time produced fairly decent products. Those days are
unfortunately long gone. And if JAWS is stable I'd hate to see unstable.
LOL. But the real problem with rehab agencies as I see it isn't so much that
they preach one product and one alone (although this is indeed a serious
problem), as the fact that they don't enlighten their clients to the fact
that there are other options available. And even when they do they usually
speak of said alternatives in much the same way that a conservatively
religious person will often speak of other religions than their own, as
things to be avoided at all costs.
But thou must!

Hi David.
Others have answered your specific questions at least as well as, (and
probably better) than I can.
But I want to comment on the problem which besets Window-Eyes the world
over - namely, that agencies are refusing to develop informed knowledge of
its capabilities, and for balance, its shortcomings.
What happens therefore is that the agency will purchase what it says you
will have, but if you make an independent and informed decision, you usually
purchase your preferred option.
In New Zealand: my agency refuses to help me with Window-eyes issues, and I
use my personal copy at work, whereas my colleague has had Jaws purchased
for her.
It is not my role to say to her that my screen reader is better than yours,
but I think it is the job of the agencies (who get funding to purchase these
things), to provide objective and informed advice, which includes the
opportunity for interaction with all similar products.
Or: maybe it is the job of the agency to not purchase anything, but help you
to make an informed purchase.
Finally: to get back to a point in your message - I urge updating to
Window-eyes v8.1, because although there are well documented stability
issues, in my humble opinion, every new release of Window-Eyes is better
than its predecessor. And just for balance: the GW people have acknowledged
publicly and to me off list that they are anxious to deal with the stability
problems which they accept are causing difficulties.
I have no desire to touch JAWS, which seems to me to be more problematic
than Window-eyes and not value for money when making a purchasing choice.
Window-eyes is vastly easier to install - I run my license on three
machines; it is easier to configure and is far more transparent or seamless
with Windows. But yes: not having used JAWS for at least six years - I am
very biased!
Vaughan.

Subject: Comparing WE and JFW, (probably OT)
Hi, I wasn't sure whether to classify this message as off topic or what. So
please acdept my apologies if I should have.
I have windows 7 64 bit on an H.P. laptop using WE 7.5.4.1 I have used WE
for the past 11 years and have been mostly happy with it. I recently
started my own business out of my home and the Bureau Of Blind services here
in Illinois are working with me on doing some different things with my
business computer that will make more things more efficient for me.
They are highly recommending I try JFW and have even gotten me a demo copy
to try. So I thought I would give it a try just to see if there is really
any difference.
What I am wondering can I install JFW on the same computer that has WE on
it?
With WE I have the speech come on with windows.
I am wondering how to have both on the machine and have WE start like it
always has but then what steps do I need to tyake to start JFW. I know I
can use Control-alt-W to turn off WE But is that what I need to do and then
start JFW.
I am sure I will not like JFW but like I said the BBB are insisting I at
least give JFW a try.
So any advice that can be given I will greatly appreciate.
Thanks,
David Crowell
