Hi David,

I was a JAWS user a few years ago (because my division of blind services
recommended it), and I switched to Window-Eyes and have been much happier
since.

I'd like to point out in the strongest of terms, that in my opinion the
blind services agencies aren't recommending jaws for your benefit, but for
their own. They find it easier to only support one product, so they select
this product, and then tell everyone "we think this is really best for you
....". A very lousy thing to do.

Next, I'd like to point out that the difference between the products may not
lie in technical comparisons of the moment, but in the company and its
policies which stand behind the products. I've found that the two products
are constantly "leap-frogging" each other with technical advancements;
however, I left jaws largely because I found the support to be absolutely
intolerably bad (for many years running), and a large part of my problems
were with their copy-protection (which Window-eyes doesn't have in the U.S.
and many countries).

As far as I know, Freedom Scientific does not offer mailing lists for its
customers where it participates, answering their questions as GW does. This
support often involves those who wrote the product (called the developers),
another problem I had with jaws; the support I had access to was being given
by those who weren't programmers, and who hadn't had anything to do with
developing the product).

So, before you make your comparison entirely on what may be best for someone
else, and on someone else's list of technical points, I wanted you to at
least consider what else you are buying when you buy an assistive technology
product.

Hth,

Chip

Subject: Comparing WE and JFW, (probably OT)

Hi, I wasn't sure whether to classify this message as off topic or what. So
please acdept my apologies if I should have.

I have windows 7 64 bit on an H.P. laptop using WE 7.5.4.1 I have used WE
for the past 11 years and have been mostly happy with it. I recently
started my own business out of my home and the Bureau Of Blind services here
in Illinois are working with me on doing some different things with my
business computer that will make more things more efficient for me.
They are highly recommending I try JFW and have even gotten me a demo copy
to try. So I thought I would give it a try just to see if there is really
any difference.
What I am wondering can I install JFW on the same computer that has WE on
it?
With WE I have the speech come on with windows.
I am wondering how to have both on the machine and have WE start like it
always has but then what steps do I need to tyake to start JFW. I know I
can use Control-alt-W to turn off WE But is that what I need to do and then
start JFW.
I am sure I will not like JFW but like I said the BBB are insisting I at
least give JFW a try.

So any advice that can be given I will greatly appreciate.

Thanks,
