Well, I hadn't read Steve's message when I wrote mine, but my reply was obviously a simplistic answer while Steve seems to indicate this is a known issue.

Do you happen to be using windows-M? If so, try using windows-D instead. Windows-M minimizes all windows, but doesn't always take you to the desktop afterwards; while windows-D does always take you to the desktop (that's its function anyway).
