I also tried opening Word 2007/10 versions of a file with 2003 to
see if the compatibility Pack was the culprit, however that didn't
change anything. Whether I open a document that needs to be
converted or one that was originally created in 2003, the end result
is the same.
I have re-installed the Office 2003 set files and updated them as
well.

Open a Word document that has text.
Press control+A to select all.
Press the Application Context menu key.
Arrow down to Font and press the Enter key.
When I use the up and down arrow keys to look for a particular
font, WE says Device Font 12 CPI instead of the font name.
