What I can say about Cisco and there soft phone story is this. The Cisco IP
communicator is only somewhat accessible only in as much as some of the context
menus are accessible, however, any of the phone functions are not. What is
available is a third party product called Accessa phone that allows you do
control all phone functions such as making and receiving calls including caller
ID, you can park hold, set speed dials, transfer ETC. There is also another
product called IP Blue, it is quite a bit more in cost and it does have its own
communicator that syncs with the Cisco call manager, it is more difficult to
use from a technical side, I like IP Blue a lot however, I'll use Access phone
as it is more cost effective especially for multiple users. I cannot comment
on the messaging portion as Oracle has a different process for that. I'd be
glad to have more conversations about the different Cisco issues as I am
currently helping Oracle evaluate this.

Martha,
Amanda Lee and I are in conversation about the Cisco products. My company
moved to Cisco this summer for instant messaging and soft phones. I only use
the instant messaging part now and have definite accessibility issues with it.
My teammate just got a soft phone and she says it links to the instant
messaging function, so I would imagine I would also have issues with that. I
have no need for a soft phone, so I cannot directly test if for you. Having
said that, when I was on Cisco's website looking for accessibility information
a couple months ago, the pdf I found seemed to talk more about keyboard
commands for providing accessibility to the phone, not the instant message.
So, maybe between those keyboard commands and using the cursor keys, you'll be
able to manage it.
In the instant message window, I have to use the mouse cursor keys to access
most things, such as my contact list and the window to add new contacts.

I can't find that PDF, but I just found this website for the version of Jabber
we are using, 9.2. Interesting, it indicates that you can use Tab and arrows
to navigate the contact list and messaging window. I have not found that to
work, so I don't know the issue.

Here's the website with the accessibility info:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/jabber/Windows/9_2/JABW_BK_A28DF1E2_00_accessibility-guide-for-cisco-jabber_chapter_00.html

Amanda's company is in the process of rolling out Cisco's jabber and she's
partnering with me to see if we can figure out some options.

I raised the issue to our technology team and was told that they called Cisco
about my issues. It would have been nice if I'd been on the call to hear it
first hand, but what I was told is that Cisco admitted that their products have
issues with screen readers. I was also told that Cisco was going to do
something next year to allow companies like GW Micro better access to the
coding they use so that screen readers could be made more accessible. This is
above my technical understanding and seemed funny to Amanda, so we'll have to
see where that lands.

Please let us know if you try it and how it goes. Together, maybe we can get
some collective pressure to make necessary changes.

Does anyone know if this is accessible using WE 8.3.
I telecommute and my employer uses this to reach off-site employees.

Martha
