Hi Mike, I understand what you are saying about your keyboard problem. I was just telling you about what happened to me when I first installed 8.1. I hope you get your problem resolved. In my case, I think 8.1 is an improvement over 8.0, but I still can't get 8.1's search to work right.

As I indicated in my last post, I don't think Window-eyes is the culprit. I could be wrong, but I'll bet doughnuts to dollars that Windows 8.1 is the culprit. I do have n v d a installed and keep forgetting to see if the same behavior is exhibited using n v d a. Like I said, first letter navigation works, restarting the pc brings the arrow key function back and then it stops working after a minute or two. At first I used the wrong subject line and changed it hoping to clarify things. I never had the problems I have been having using Windows 8. The quirky keyboard behavior didn't start until I upgraded to 8.1. -----Original Message----- From: Bob, K8LR [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, October 27, 2013 3:41 PM To: GW Micro Subject: Re: Windows 8.1 Appears to Cause my keyboard to respond to keystrokes erratically Mike, When I first installed windows 8.1 on my gateway pc I had trouble with IE 11. When I would bring up IE 11, Window-eyes would just report a blank screen. I called GW Micro support and sent them an error report. In about 2 hours for reasons I don't understand, IE11 started working perfectly. This problem is not a W E problem as neither narator or nvda could read the ie11 screen either. But once internet explorer started working, all of the speech programs worked too. When IE was not working, I could tab through links, but the arrow keys did not seem to work, but now everything is working perfectly. I still do not know what happened or what fixd the problem. I changed the subject line for a reason. Refer to previous messages for the original subject line. I have observed that after upgrading from Windows 8 to 8.1 on my Dell desktop pc that keystrokes behave erratically. When I try to use the arrow keys, they stop working after the pc is restarted or is booted up from a cold shut down. First letter navigation works, however. For example, let's say the arrow keys won't navigate the desktop left, right, up or down. If I restart the pc, the arrow keys work again for about a minute or two. Then the same behavior occurs. When this behavior occurred and I launched Humanware Companion, the first item in my list of talking books would read, but the up or down arrow keys wouldn't highlight the 32 items. First letter navigation worked, however. Also, Windows 8.1 changed the Window-eyes setting to the default browse mode setting to tones only. Since none of the arrow keys would work, I couldn't access the tree view accept by first letter navigation. A restart got the arrow keys to work again and I was able to make the changes in browse mode to speech and tones. Also, this quirky behavior causes the numbpad keys to not speak. I was on the phone with one of the Microsoft accessibility support technicians for nearly two hours today. He uninstalled and reinstalled the keyboard driver and that didn't fix the problem. He also checked for driver updates and there weren't any. I really hope that Gw Micro can duplicate the issues, and can contact the right folks at Microsoft to solve these issues. The reason I'm able to send this message to the list is thanks to having a laptop with Windows 7 64 bit on it. I unintentionally sent multiple messages to the Gw-apps list because I was having such a difficult time proofreading messages and determining whether they were sent or not. In my opinion, Windows 8.1 is one of the most glitch prone upgrades I have ever tried. However, I am willing to try to stick things out under the circumstances. Mike M. P.S. Having said all of this, I'm willing to wait and see if Gw Micro can duplicate the issues, but I'm surely glad I have a reliable operating system in Windows 7 64 bit. My desktop pc is a Dell Xps-8500 running Window-eyes 8.3 under Windows 8.1. My laptop is a Dell Xps-501 running Windows 7 64 bit home premium and Window-eyes 8.3.
