Thanks, David, that solved it! I've deleted each of those 10 entries and it no longer says inch after a number in quotes. I don't do a whole lot with mathematics, so i've deleted those entries. Thanks again so much for all your hard work!

This is indeed one of the things that the Extended Dictionary can do for you, and depends on a whole section of entries, found in any of the English Dictionaries. It will, by default, be a global thing for your voice, but you could simply move this section of entries away from the Voice-Specific Dictionary, and into a Software-Specific Dictionary. So, if you don't want it to behave this way in general, but you need it to do so when running say a construction software, you can simply Cut-And-Paste the section from your Voice-Dictionary, to your Software-Dictionary.

By default, it is in your Voice-Specific Dictionary, which you reach by the hotkey of Alt-Shift-2. Once the Dictionary file opens, you can search for a line saying
   Inch Measurements.
The following section header and comments, will come up. I have pasted this directly from the dictionary, and it might explain well enough how this set of entries works. As per now, it only takes care of Inches, in that it looks out for a number, followed by a Quotation Mark. Yet, if you want it to look out for a number, followed by an Apostrophe, and then have it say "Feet", then simply copy the section, and modify it with the correct characters. I will - in the coming versions - include the Feet-entries, should this be a want from the user community.

; **** Inch measurements
; Many times, measurements given in inches, will be given as a number, followed by a quotation mark. ; This could lead to some misunderstanding, since the screen reader does not generally care about the quotation mark. ; Hence, often the number 12, and the length of 12" (inches), will both be spoken as only 12. ; We will attempt to replace any digit, immediately followed by a quotation mark, with the diget, followed by the word INCH. ; This will ensure, that no matter if the the number in question is a Single-Digit number, or is made up of more than one digit, ; it still will be handled as a complete number followed by the spoken word "inch". ; Note: In cases where a cited phrase would happen to end with a number, the following ten definitions will cause the number to be handled as a measurement in inches.

After this introductory, you will find ten entries, that all take care of the inch measurements. If you dislike this behavior altogether, then just delete those ten entries, and you will have no more bugging inches on your shoulders. Smile. BTW, just after this section, you will find another section, dealing with further inch handling. Like in cases, where you would see things like: 2-1/4", which by the Dictionary's default entries, will be read as
   2 and 1 quarter inch.
Again, feel free to delete or modify this section to your heart's desire.

Much of this, will be handled more detailed in the User's Guide. Reach it, by hitting Alt-Shift-9.

Regards,
David (Author of the Extended Dictionary)

I don't have the app but might just go and get it for this exact reason.
The Quotation marks that follow a number are sort of a short hand for the
word INCHES and an Apostrophe is short for FOOT.
In the construction field that is how we write numbers. It would appear that
an entry was made to include this short hand.
I am sure that there is an entry that could be adjusted to make it stop
saying that for you.
However, I will go and investigate it because I would like to hear the
numbers that way. It would be especially nice to find that these entries
could be made program specific. This sort of notation is all over our
estimating program and our accounting program.

Thanks for sharing this tid-bit. I didn't think I would ever need or want
the app but I just might find it to be fantastic.

Subject: Oddities with the extended dictionary app

                    Hi guys

I've recently installed the extended dictionary app and am really loving
the way it reads things. I've removed a few entries and have modified a
few and I've got it working pretty much exactly the way I want.
It's doing something strange though, and I need to know how I can fix
this.
I'm currently using the dectalk access 32 for Window-eyes voice, and for
some odd reason when you write a number in quotes such as "100" or "50"
the synthesizer says 100 inch, or 50 inch instead of just 100 or 50. In
other words, whenever a number is written in quotes, the synthesizer
seems to add the word inch after the number. I don't remember seeing
anything in any of the dictionary files to indicate that this should
happen, and I didn't murge my dictionary entries with the extended
dictionary. i figured I'd mention this now since I might be asked this
later on. It's not a huge deal but I noticed it in an email someone had
written earlier and I did a double take. I thought why is it saying 100
inch when the number is in quotes? This happens globally, so it's not
something that's application-specific. I hope I've given enough
information to help solve the issue. If I deleted an entry on accident
that controls this sort of thing I'm hoping someone can tell me what I
can do to fix it.

Thanks.

Chris
