Shakespeare once said that discretion is the better part of valor. I think that if I were in your place, I would take the simple approach of unloading WE while using Kurzweil. I realize, of course, that this is not a fix; but it would work unless you had to lift information out of the document read by Kurzweil and paste it into an application which needed WE. One thing to keep in mind is that even though you put WE in a silent mode, it probably still has some hooks engaged here and there; and it still occupies some RAM. I hope, however, that someone on this listserve will give you a better answer; but I'm sure you can get a faster response from Kurzweil if you unload WE; and that will at least get you by for awhile until a better approach comes along.

Subject: WE and Kurzweil

Hello,

I have been using Kurzweil and WE together for a long time. I have noticed that Kurzweil is very slow at responding when WE is running. I have chosen the silent.set to allow WE to run in the background for when I need to alt-tab to other programs. Last night, the response time was so slow at responding to the page down command or the stop speaking command, that I was spending way too much time trying to move from page to page. Ultimately, I ended up turning off WE and found there was an amazing difference in response time. In fact, to stop the speaking once I moved from one page to the next in my file improved from over a minute per page to only a very few seconds, maybe one or two. Are there any know fixes to stop this from happening when I need to work with larger files? The file is approximately 450 kb in size. I am running a Windows 7 Home Premium computer with 64-bit and 6 gb Ram. Thank you for any helpful suggestions.

Carol
