Hi Carol,

My system specs are the same, and mine is a Dell Inspiron. I have K1000 version 13 and WE 8.4, and I've noticed the same performance in Kurzweill for a couple of years now. Fortunately, I haven't had the grinding-to-a halt experience you have had, but, at times, it's pretty slow.

One thing I did tonight, and got immediate improvement, as well as a quieter fan noise (which indicates less overall system stress) was to use Windows-R to open the Windows Run dialog, type msconfig and press enter to bring up the Microsoft Configuration Utility. This is a multi-tab dialog, and on the Startup tab, you'll find the list of programs which start up automatically at Windows bootup. I happened to recognize four programs which are not necessary. If your system is a Dell, you can disable two of these which refer to the name "Dell Stage." You disable entries by using the spacebar to unselect them. Once you've finished unselecting entries, you can tab to the Apply button and press it, whereupon you will be asked if you wish to restart your machine. The changes will only take effect after this restart, so you can go ahead and do this.

I should caution you to only disable entries you recognize, and I can assure you that disabling the two Dell Stage entries on my system have not caused me any problems so far. As a general policy, there's no point letting programs start up at Windows bootup if they aren't necessary, the reason being that not only do they use up memory, but they can often make calls to system resources which, the programs being unnecessary, they don't need to be doing.

Just to reiterate, Window-Eyes is currently running on my system, so is K1000 with a BookShare book loaded (which is a memory-hungry enterprise, for some reason), and I have never heard my fan run as quietyly as it is now.

Hope this works for you.

Good luck,

Rod

Hello,

I have been using Kurzweil and WE together for a long time. I have noticed that Kurzweil is very slow at responding when WE is running. I have chosen the silent.set to allow WE to run in the background for when I need to alt-tab to other programs. Last night, the response time was so slow at responding to the page down command or the stop speaking command, that I was spending way too much time trying to move from page to page. Ultimately, I ended up turning off WE and found there was an amazing difference in response time. In fact, to stop the speaking once I moved from one page to the next in my file improved from over a minute per page to only a very few seconds, maybe one or two. Are there any know fixes to stop this from happening when I need to work with larger files? The file is approximately 450 kb in size. I am running a Windows 7 Home Premium computer with 64-bit and 6 gb Ram. Thank you for any helpful suggestions.

Carol
