Hi Wendy,
If both WE and NVDA are not talking then it sounds like a sound card
problem. Either the speech is being muted or the computer has chosen
another non working sound device.
I experienced this problem numerous times and worked around it in two
ways. WE Eloquence was routed through an external sound card while
another WE or Microsoft voice was routed through the sound card on the
motherboard. If Eloquence was silent on boot up, then, by means of the
voice rotor app,a change to the other voice coming from the motherboard
set of speakers was simple. Once speech was regained, then I could go
into the WE control panel devices, syns and check which sound card WE
Eloquence was paired up to.
Each time this problem occurred I found, for some reason, the
highlighted soundcard was no longer the Creative external card but some
other which didn't work. The problem was only experienced on boot up.
The other method was to have NVDA's output sent to the speakers attached
to the motherboard. If WE didn't work as mentioned above, then NVDA
would hopefully give speech and get me out of trouble.
This problem occurred on an AMD quad core system but since upgrading
the system to an AMD 8 core cpu and equivalent motherboard, the problem
has not been experienced. But, the upgrade only took place a few weeks
ago. However, under the AMD quad system, the problem started on about
day one.

Sometimes when I first boot up I get the Window-Eyes opening sound but no
speech. I have tried pressing control alt W to get it going but nothing
happens. I have also tried launching NVDA but it doesn't work either. All
I can do is press the power button on my computer to shut down and start
again. Can anyone suggest why this is happening?
