When using Thunderbird the up and down arrows take you through the list

This question was asked recently by someone else and myself, but the
only answer I got was to hit Enter. This was a very incomplete
answer. It does not do what is needed. No other proper answer was ever given.
When typing in an edit box to enter my user ID on the BARD site, just
my example, as I start, I hear 5 suggestions and the reading of one
of the suggestions. I was told to hit Enter and that was it. It was
no particular surprise then that the partial typing I'd done was an
invalid user ID. Hitting arrows does nothing either. Tabbing moves
me to the next edit box.
So just how is it one is to access the list of suggestions? Once
there how do you choose one?
Thanks!
Marilyn
