Hi: Well, I have made this puppy much, much better. The download installer didn’t read anything with WE, I had to use JAWS and that only read the links. Fortunately they had enough text for the link to understand somewhat to do but I cant imagine that is all that is available to sighted folks. No download status, no what modules are getting installed nothing except a message of install was completed successfully when done. WE was useless without browse mode or with it. Actually, I think it was just not available if I remember. So far I have the w8.1 and ie 11 working much better after doing some tweaks to the eye candy settings and turning of auto-spell checking - that may have been causing some problems for screen readers and WE in particular when trying to type in some system boxes and especially in ie 11 search box. Things are much, much more responsive now in both w 8.1 in general and in ie 11 in particular. I am keeping notes about these tweaks and will publish them at the end of my trying to get this puppy to hunt. I have yet to turn off spell-checking in Windows Live Mail but even here the changes I have made so far seem to have it ripping along much better. So far I have been able to read what I type, review and all that jazz but this is only the second or third mail message and the first one was not reading what I typed. I could speculate about the programming causes but suffice to say things are much better so far but will keep my ears on - smile.

Rick,

I am glad you got the download issue resolved. I would send GW an email about the other issue you are having at [email protected] and see if they can help, because I don't have any ideas.

Thank you.

Brendon Donohue.

Hi: This one is reading?
It seems to be working. Not sure why except I just turned off allot of the
eye candy like automate fading in and out, sliding of boxes into view and
all that jazz for w 8.1 - not sure has any impact on wLive but could be.
I think there is a spell checker going on. Also, so far even the typing is
more crisp so I'll see how it goes but fingers crossed performance is big
with me and this seems a little better - still early in the eval process
though.
I'd better start taking notes on all this for others who might hit the wall
and want to just blow their brains out when trying w 8.1 for the first time.
OK, wanted to post this since inconsistence of sometimes reading and
sometimes not reading messages and even when in IE 11 sometimes reading text
and sometimes not, regardless of browse mode, has been a major frustration
so far - hope its better with all the animation and fancy dynamic UI candy
disabled - we will see.
Thanks for the help - this computer almost went back to Dell and I almost
became a Linux user!

Hi Guys:
I type this, am hearing the letters but have no way of reviewing what I
wrote. Browse mode wont to anything, just hear "A" not turned on off or any
clicks. This whole 8.1 is a joke and it isnt only windoweyes, 8.1 just is
the worst software outside of just totally inaccessible software I have
used. Cant find anythinge, suppose to get warnings and status and messages
while doing things but nothing. Well I'll sign off since fat fingeringa and
cant review to fix anything.

And if you just want to take control and do it your way here's how.
Instead of activating a download link just focus it, hit the
applications key or Shift-F10, and use the Save as option to save it to
whatever folder you want.
This is what I do with all downloads in Windows 7 and IE11. And when the
download is done I'm notified. So I hit Alt-N, Tab to the Open folder
button, Space bar, and I'm on the file. I do this because I don't want
everything I download dumped into a one size fits all folder only to
move what I just downloaded to another folder anyway.

Hi Rick,

Regarding installing executables, normally, you'll get a pop-up message
asking if you want to Run (Alt-R will choose this) or Save (Alt-S will
choose that), and, if you choose the latter, you'll begin the save
process which saves the file in your browser's default download folder;
after this, of course, you have to go find it and run it from there.
This is what normally happens if you're using Internet Explorer.

Hi:
I tried to download 2 files from the internet.
both were installer executables.
When I click them I get a window but we reads nothing. If I tab I
heard items 1 items selected of 7 and something similar for the other
one but no selection list and no other controls. I only found that
little bit after mousing around.
WE did not read the necessary download bar on the Microsoft download
site using alt+n -- if that is the correct way to work with that bar
so I had a sighted person perform the download.
Also, when trying to setup my network sometimes things read ok,
sometimes 2 or more items in the listview read as a single item and I
have to use the mouse to select one of those 2 items.
So far, a sighted person has had to help setup the network, a sighted
person had to download the Visual Studio Express, I cant get it to
install since that window doesn't read at all and I even downloaded
another screen reader to see if I couldn't get Windows to work
somewhat for these things but that download brings up that empty
window when I click the installer. If something is set wrong there are
no messages I can find about these executable files and I don't see
anything in the properties that indicate a problem.
If there are some settings or steps I need to perform could you let me
know?
I will try and use Narrator to see if anything comes up but I am
trying to learn to do things the WindowEyes way.
