Well I don't think it was about control. It really was about the fact that
the kit was not being used all that much buy other software.  It was badly
out of date to keep up with skype features and codecs.  For example it could
not do video it could not do screen sharing etc.  also Microsoft decided to
end support for all older versions of skype.  This means they would have had
to update the skype kit for it to continue  working. It also did not work on
windows 8 and 8.1.  this means yet again they would have needed to update
the skype kit to get it working.  There was not enough return for Microsoft
to do this.  What I don't get is Microsoft has said on the skype blog and
other places that this was happening so the support for skype kit ending
should really not have come as a surprise.

Well, it's a business decision. They apparently want to have control over
the product, and its future development. These changes often happen when a
product is sold or taken over by another company.

IT used to be fast and responsive, when it was version 3.8 and a few
versions after that. IT's really sad that Microsoft is now deciding that
this is how they are going to cut off they're nose despite they're face.
I think they might look back and say, "Boy, we made a huge mistake."
