When I do this, it's actually opening a preview of the Excel file in the body of the message. I use the Control Alt A option to open the attachment dialog box. I've done some other things to get my mouse to the attachment then use the context key to select open, not preview. Not sure if there is a way to disable that preview option in Outlook. I haven't seen it.
