Braille is awesome for picking up things like spacing and misspellings. But it still only shows you what the screen reader sends to it, so you're not going to get accurate attribute changes unless the screen reader can track them. ----- Original Message ----- From: Vaughan Dodd To: 'Van Lant, Robin' ; 'gwi' Sent: Monday, December 15, 2014 4:40 PM Subject: RE: advice sought - just had another horribly embarrassing issue at work
Hi Robert. I also use the attribute changes hot key, (Windows-A by edfault) when proofreading. But lately, I have been wondering just how accurate Window-eyes is in this regard. I also make frequent use of insert-V (verbosity) when proofreading. I hope the following is not seen as judgemental, but if you have braille skills, hook up a braille display as it is great for proofreading. A combination of speech and braille can make proofreading slow, but doubt about specific document details is reduced if you can have th3e combination. I do understand the essential requirement to meet formatting standards, and documents are becoming more and more complex, so good luck for the future. Vaughan. Trick here was that I didn't even think to use it because I didn't realize there was formatting to remove. Someone else suggested offline to me to use the key combo to remove all formatting from my Word document. These nominations had a lot of bulleting in them already, so I think that is why I didn't want to go so drastic. As it turns out, I discovered that one of the people who submitted a nomination to me had used track changes. He told me today he thought he'd sent me a version with that removed, but I wonder if he was just looking at his copy in Final with no mark up and accidentally sent me the edits. Either way, I suddenly remembered the alt [ key combo to move to each reviewing comment and that's is how I figured out that someone had some inserted text that I hadn't noticed before I sent it out last week. I guess I need to get in the habit of either doing that or accepting all changes before I sent out a document I've compiled from others. Someone also suggested I try the proofreading app. I'll look into that. Control E is useful if you know where to look, but I can't go word for word through a document doing that to figure out if someone included a format I don't want. Thanks all for the ideas so far. Then, you could copy and paste it into Notepad. Then, you could select the whole Notepad contents, copy and paste it into a new email, and send it back to that sighted person and they would know if any of the formatting remained. I think it would be gone, unless I'm seriously mistaken, since Notepad only deals with plain text. Last week I needed to send everyone a compilation of nominations they'd sent in. I copied some from Word documents and most from Outlook messages sent to me. I placed them into a Word 2010 format Before I sent them, I selected all the text and changed the font to black, which I don't find easy in Word and would love any advice there, and also removed all highlighting, because I know one manager had highlighted the nominee's names. Today, I got a reply from one of the execs saying that he was very disappointed that his nomination was red-lined. I honestly don't know how that happened. I don't know if it's a track changes thing, which I had not turned on, or some other thing. I often have a coworker check the formatting before I sent, but it was late on Friday and I wanted to get it out. I am so dreadfully embarrassed here and discouraged that I cannot send out documents on my own without a proofer for these kinds of visual things. Advice please from my Word experts!
