First of all, let me extend my best wishes to you for an improved computer
experience in the coming days. Next, I will tell you that all of us on this
list have dealt with similar frustration in our experience with computers
and technology. I rememver purchasing my Windows 7 computer. Over a 3-day
period, I probably spent 20 or more hours on the project. As I can recall
about 14 or 15 hours of that were spent with sighted assistance. When I had
gotten the computer almost to my liking, I found I couldn't send an E-mail
or print anything. After about 2 hours on the phone with HP support and
restoring the computer to factory settings, I still couldn't print anything.
So, on the third day, back to the store we went and traded it ffor another
machine. In the process, we saw the salesman of the first day. He hadn't
heard of my problems but was sorry. I realized he had just pulled a machine
off the shelf. At the end of the day, We had gotten the second machine back
to where
Window-Eyes was talking and had confirmed we could print. Keep in mind that
the 20 hours did not include restoring all the programs as I had done
before. I didn't need the friend's help, so I could do it myself later. It's
been over 2-1/2 years since then. While my experience hasn't been
trouble-free, I have gotten enjoyment from it. I have had no hardware
failures or Windows crashes. The issues have involved getting used to
Windows 7 and issues with individual programs. Otherwise, I have not had
issues with new computers. I have had issues with computers that I later
determined needed to be replaced. At the time, Windows 8 had either just
become available or was about to do so. I wanted to let others discover the
bugs. I have not upgraded my computer to Windows 8 or8.1. I am sure no
matter the OS, I will have some struggles with learning it and also discover
some things I don't like. Again,my sincere best wishes to you.

For what its worth, when starting up a new pc with Windows 8.1 after say
5 or 10 minutes you can press windows-enter and Narrator would run. You
can then set up Windows 8.1 without sighted assistance.
Windows-u, alt-n will do the same for previous versions of Windows.

Michael,
I'm sure getting used to an apple will be challenging, but you know
what. The operating system works, windows 8 does not. When we tried to
get the os working, it kept freezing up, and dad was unable to figure
out how to answer the questions. I don't care if they come out with
windows 100, i'm done with windows.
