Hi Janine,
Although I cannot exactly help you with procedures, I can give you a
background summary:
What your computer reports about "serial port" is actually correct. You can
think of Bluetooth as a wireless version of serial port connections. Now,
with Vista, there are two ports needed, instead of one port that is assigned
in XP: one incoming, and one outgoing. You can set up an incoming port, but
it is hard to set up an outgoing port. If the connection was initiated by
Braille sense, as in most cases, Vista Bluetooth stack will treat it as
"incoming" port. If the computer was the one which initiated this
connection, then it will be labeled as, as common sense goes, "outgoing."
There's nothing wrong with hardware at this point nor reports with initial
connection stage. Your computer and Braille Sense have found each other and
BSQ (Braille Sense Plus QWERTY, known in Korea as BS QX) requested
activeSync service, which does make sense. Also, there's nothibg wrong with
your laptop, as BSQ is listed as one of the devices with a designated com
port. My only concern is this: the incoming com port is active, but outgoing
is not. It will require registry tweaks to fix this (sorry, but I don't have
any info on doing that) or using an alternative bluetooth stack. Currently,
I am researching how to overcome this issue (at least, I found several
websites which reports that this issue cannot be fixed with Vista natively,
thus requiring an alternative stack). I plan to conduct some trials with my
own laptop with USB Bluetooth adapter (with Toshiba Bluetooth Stack) with
another similar device to see what I can find.
Another note is that there are many services that Bluetooth supports, among
them audio, PIM (Personal Information Manager), Serial Port and so forth.
When I think of Mobile device center 6.1, I usually associate it with PIM
service.
If I have to, I'll research this whole thread (both here and in Korean HIMS
bulletins) while squeezing it with my school commitments.
For those who were on another list would know what I am talking about, and
the same thing is happening with BS family as with other devices. The
solutions? Either "under the hood" modifications to BS's Bluetooth stack
itself, or finding an alternative stack for Vista operating system which
allows assigning a single Bluetooth com port for both i/o (input/output)
channels.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Joseph P.S. Come to think of it, how about Windows 7?

Subject: [GWN] activesync via bluetooth

Hi List.

I recently purchased a BrailleSense Plus Qwerty and I am now trying to set
up activesync via Bluetooth with my Sony laptop. The Laptop is running
Windows Vista Business with Jaws version 10 as my screen reader. I have
Windows Mobile Device Centre on the laptop. I have successfully
synchronised the BrailleSense with the laptop via USB but am having problems
when trying to set it up via Bluetooth.

I have managed to pair the two devices and the laptop reports that the
BrailleSense is connected when I access the Bluetooth information from the
icon in the system tray. The BrailleSense tells me that the activesync
service is connected and says "connection succeeded" or something like that.
However the Windows Mobile Device Centre says the BrailleSense is not
connected. The Windows Mobile Device Centre is set to allow a Bluetooth
connection under connection settings.

I did notice when the laptop gives details for the BrailleSense under the
list of Bluetooth devices that it called it a computer and said something
about the service class being a Bluetooth serial port and that the port was
called Com40. I did not tell it that I wanted it to connect as a Bluetooth
serial port and in fact the laptop never gave me a choice as to anything to
do with serial ports and so on during the pairing of the two devices. I'm
not sure whether this is relevant and I have no idea whether it can be
changed or how I might change it if this is what is causing the problem.

So to summarise both laptop and BrailleSense are telling me they are
connected and the BrailleSense says that the connection to the Activesync
service succeeded but the Windows Mobile Device centre tells me the
BrailleSense is not connected and nothing happens. I know that it is not
synchronising as a couple of new appointments which I entered on the
BrailleSense do not show up on the computer.

All other services on the BrailleSense are disconnected so there is no issue
there.

Any suggestions on how I can get this to work would be greatly appreciated.
I'm probably doing something wrong but am not sure what.

Kind Regards
Janine Smith.
