Hi, Toni,

I'm a newbie to the BrailleSense Plus, but I've been using braille and braille notetakers for years. I'll try to answer your questions.

I know the BrailleSense Plus has the ability to read 8-dot braille. I know that when I created a .brl document and tried to use 8-dot braille, I couldn't do it. But I'm using a qwerty style keyboard, not a braille style keyboard. It may be possible for a person who uses a braille style keyboard to write in 8 dot braille using the BrailleSense Plus or Voice, Sense, but I haven't received many responses from those who use braille keyboards. I have a notetaker which does support 8 dot braille and foreign languages and you can write 8 dot braille, using either the qwerty or braille style keyboard.

Now, computer braille, also called "grade 0" or Ascii braille is used during the following situations: (1) e-mail addresses (2) web URLS (3) filenames, (4) groups of mixed letters and numbers like a ham radio call sign or password (5) any time a symbol like + or \ is used (6) blind computer programmers use it.

The ability to write 8-dot computer braille is important because dots 7 and 8 are used for uppercase letters and foreign language accents. For example, A in computer braille is dots 1,7 and accented a in Spanish is dots 1,2,3,5,6,8.

Unfortunately, if you need to write something in computer braille, you must use the computer braille symbols. This is because some symbols like \ < > @ cannot be translated into contracted braille.

I don't know the answers for your questions about the web browser.

I hope this helps.

Subject: [GWN] a few "newbie" questions

Hi all,

I am not really a newbie to braille, but am "late-blind" and have been utheing braille for only 3 years. I am proficient in reading contracted braille and writing it, and also some computer braille, but since I only use it to do email, web, read books, and write documents for myself, I know little about 8-dot braille and computer braille. So please be patient with this old lady. SMILE

First, I see that the Braille Sense Plus (and original) has an 8-dot braille mode. Is that just to read it, but not type using it?

Secondly, 'in what cases would you need to use 8-dot braille? I have heard for some foreign languages, but what else? Formatting documents? Nemeth codae?

Thirdly, this is about using computer braille. Is there a way to use grade 2 braille with marks around it to make it computer braille? or anything like that? I don't know if that makes sense, so for example, instead of having to switch to ASCII and type an email address, is there a way to do it in grade 2 and get the "at" sign in it AND make it "clickable" for desktop computer users, and the same with web addresses (I hope one day we can click on links and such in email on our Br and Voice Senses!)? Or do you just have to change ! Ascii? I just notiace that sometimes when I go to AASCII and then back to grade 2 that some characters change ! numbers and I have to correct it.

And lastly, this is about the web browser on the Braille Sense Plus. I found an option for "user mode" with the options of Windows CE, Windows XP, and, I think the third one was pocket PC . What is it for?

Thanks,
