Hi,
Sounds like what Terri is describing is more than just a router - more like
network storage system where the UsB port is used to attach a hard disk of
some sort.

Terri,
Could it be your router really isn't a wireless router, but the plug for 
connecting to another device is actually an ethernet port.  They do look 
similar to a usb port, but usually more square looking.

This is just a guess on my part, but maybe something to look for.
