Hi there,
According to my tests, Apex does not leave a space between words and parenthesis. Also, using both letter sign and without, the one of the letter sign was translated as "ness," whereas the one without was translated corrctly. For instance, the phrase "the computer(s)", when translated as text reads fine; however, when a letter sign is inserted, the "ness" value is added. Also, according to my tests, there's no way of choosing to display the letter sign or not (well, braille is displayed according to how you typed it). However, invoking speech synthesizer (Eloquence and KeyNote Gold), it reads the passage fine (the word without the letter sign is read fine). As for slash character, I personally tend to put in dots 4-5-6, 3-4 and clarity. When it is translated, the normal slash appears. Also, you don't need dot 4 before the slash (I think it was UEB). Yes, KeySoft does support UEB - the default viewing language would still be USA even if you've changed to UEB and performed either of: Clear Settings Reset, ROM Clean Reset, and erasing and formatting Flash Disk (I've discovered it thanks to a BrailleNote List member who shall remain nameless). As for CF cards, I personally agree that it is somewhat of a bad idea to remove it at first; however, with potentials of USB and support for SDHC and external CF card reader... well, I'll leave it up to people to decide.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Joseph

Hi Joseph:

Thanks a trillion for the comparisons. To be sure I understand the last part of your message pertaining to the Apex, permit me to tell a little
story, <smile>!

I have an older BrailleNote running Keysoft 5.1 Build 22, and an MPower that I can't use because it was DOA when it got to me; I had bought it from a seller on one of the buy and sell blindness-related mailing lists.

Anyway, back to my ancient Keysoft 5.1. Using this BrailleNote I can write words like: piece(s), buy(s), look(s)--you get the idea! On this BrailleNote, no spaces are inserted between the last character and the one appearing in parentheses. In fact, the words appear the way I have them
written.

Now back to the Apex--if I understand your take on my note to the list, does the Apex leave a space between the last character and a character appearing in parentheses? Example: look (dots 5-6s). Also, does the Apex insert a dot 4 and dots 3-4 to represent the slash character? Is there a way I can tell the Apex that I DO NOT wish to have Braille apearing on my notetaker
screen in this way?

Sorry I don't have the Apex to try things out. I could not come up with the $2,399 or so needed to upgrade this dead MPower to the Apex. Moreover, I am
disappointed that Humanware did away with the Compactflash Card.

I hope my long-winded explanation does make some modicum of sense. Thanks
for your help!

Sincerely,
Olusegun
