I wonder if GW couldn't do that one better though and have a restore factory defaults option on the CD that does not require the removal of the installation itself. I would welcome it, personally.

Because there's no guarantee that the all users profile hasn't been mucked with, the only solution to get a true, clean factory install is to uninstall, and re-install. Because the quick install is, well, quick, it's simple to do. We recommend this as support techs when people want to do what you're asking about.
