If it's an introductory course in Java, there's a good chance your friend won't get so far into GUI interfaces that it would be a big issue. If they do get into making GUI's, WE4Java can work its magic when they are using the Java classes most commonly used for the task. Your friend just might have to take a little extra time learning what in the guts of each UI object contributes to WE4Java getting relevant information, like any set of tools used for UI creation.
