Thanks Ron. Yes, I can see where I can calculate it; I have done so, but I'm not sure if I've allowed for the ability to restart numbering part way through a document. I also then have to format the calculated number myself to the desired form (roman numerals for instance). I have also tried moving the insertion point to the footnote reference mark, then getting the clip which is there so, I end up using the OSM for it. I'm not sure which is best, but I was hoping you had a third alternative! thanks. Chip

We do use the object model, but the best answer I can give you for how we get note marks is "you really don't want to know that." It's ugly. As far as I know, you're right: it's not actually in the object model anywhere per se. You have to reinvent that particular wheel. Fortunately, they do give you enough clues in various parts of the object model to do so.
