Doug,

We like UTF-16 for a couple reasons. The native .INI operating system APIs handle ANSI and UTF-16 automatically. We like storing our scripts as UTF-16 because COM requires UTF-16. So yes, we can save the script as UTF-8 but than Window-Eyes has to convert it to UTF-16 before sending it off to the script interpreter.

Given the extra time to convert from UTF-8 and the small number of hard drive bytes saved, we opted to just default to UTF-16 even though UTF-8 is still supported.

The web site says .we files are forced to be Unicode. Do you allow
UTF-8 or force UTF-16? I prefer UTF-8 whenever possible, but I
noticed a lot of files on App Central use UTF-16. If UTF-16 is
officially preferred, I'd be interested to know why, since both UTF-8
and UTF-16 can represent all Unicode characters, but UTF-8 takes way
less space to do so and, if I'm not mistaken, is far less subject to
byte-ordering problems. I also see some tools that flip out over
UTF-16 files but not UTF-8 files, though admittedly the tools I've
seen do this are either old, Unix- or Cygwin-based, or both.
