To this I would just add that in this case I do have some file format
documentation.   But it might be outdated.  I have files of version 500
and 520, whatever it means, and these seem to load correctly.  The
format Gwyddion expects is quite specific (partially due to troubles
with telling the dozen of TIFF-based formats apart) so even relatively
minor changes may mean it is not loaded right.

As Daniil wrote, whatever went wrong, it's hard to tell without seeing
the file.

If you can provide file format specifications it would be of course
helpful.
