Well, MS Windows does not seem to follow the Freedesktop thumbnail
management standard...  So gwyddion-thumbnailer can create the thumbnail
images.  But you will see them only in Gwyddion and perhaps some other
Unix programs – or not, as Unix programs do not really agree among
themselves how to handle this kind of system integration in MS Windows.

The missing piece is a Windows shell extension (or how it is called now)

which can provide thumbnails to the Windows shell.  I do not have the
expertise to write such extension.  In fact, I do not even have the
means of testing it properly.  I suppose a number of people would
appreciate such extension though.

The generate-a-thumbnail-for-this-SPM-file piece is already implemented
in gwyddion-thumbnailer.  For me, this is the easy part.  The difficult
part is the proper installation, registration and interfacing to MS
Windows so that it actually works.
