It was an atypical Saturday ride with some riders going off at 9am, and the rest of us leaving at 9:30. It was eerily foggy and a bit cool, and, with some time to kill I sat in Bert's heated truck with Don until the start of the ride. Once we left the comforts and warmth of his truck I developed a chill that took miles to get rid of.
We had Tony (yes; he's back!), Bert, Don, Ed, Lou, the Paddy, Steve, Justin (a friend of Steve's visiting from Colorado), and myself. There were about 6 others that left earlier (the Claude/Smith tandem, Kim, and others that I did not recognize). Unfortunately, Steve and Justin had to head back because Justin had to catch a flight back to the altitude state, and we lost 2 strong riders. Darn. This meant more work for the rest of us. I think that Justin was being a bit selfish. I am sure that there were later flights. It was a good ride, and, we were all thankful to Lou for pulling most of the way down Red Mill, and then up Geer and down Burton. (It turns out that he got his energy from a Snickers bar.) Bert did the work up Patterson; Don carried us up Olive Branch with a big push from Bert, and then Lou, and then Bert again. I was just trying to hang on to whomever had the hot hand. My hat (or, should I say helmet) is off to the Paddy and Tony. Both of them have had issues that have kept them from training the way that they would have liked, but they both were a big part of today's ride. The Paddy, because he has that great attitude and even took a number of pulls; and, Tony, because, well, because he is Tony. Our leader. Not having put in the miles and he was latched on all the way up Cassam.
