At the expense of getting him upset since he really doesn't know me from Adam,
I wanted to finally share with the group something about a rider who has been
riding with the Gryos.

When I ran track in the mid to late 70's I was aware of a very talented
half-miler who ran in a different section of New York state (I was in Section
5; he was in Section 3, I believe). In fact, he was the very best in 880 (now
the 800), the 1,000 yds (rarely run anymore), and the mile.

He did the unthinkable when he won both the 880 and the mile in the same meet!
And, this was no ordinary meet: it was the State championships! What a talent.

He went on to make the 1980 Olympic team, but, that is the one that we
boycotted (that sucked). I really believe that he would have won the gold medal
in the 800 meters. He certainly had as much a chance at doing this as any other
runner in the world.

He ran a 1:44 for the 800; a 3:54 for the mile, and a 2:19 for the 1,000. World
class times, and only accomplished by the very elite of elites.

At various points in his career he was ranked number one in the world (880);
held the world record (1,000), and had the fastest time in the world.

He has been inducted into the Hall of Fame. He was someone that I admired while
I was running (I was a sprinter, but I did do 880's in practice. Anyone who has
run this gut-wretching distance knows how blazingly fast 1:44 is...)

This person is our own Don Paige.

You can kill me when we ride together next, Don. But, you will be so tired from
your ride with Andy this weekend that I am safe for a bit. Be prepared for
Otter! And, you cant' go 10 feet in any direction at Andy's lakehouse without
hitting a serious climb.

That's it!! If any of this is inaccurate, please forgive me, Don. But, former
track coaches are usually pretty good with times and distances.
