I agree with that. I tried to set a good pace on MT. Vernon on Sunday but I
was too slow for some and just right for others – to your point. 

Here would be my suggestion: if some are planning on a faster than 17-18
pace and you make a gap up MT. Vernon keep going regardless of what you hear
with the point KEEP going so it is clear you are forming another group.
People in the group need to learn to let them go unless they are joining.
This would apply on both Saturday and Sunday rides since a steady effort is
really the best way to ride – obviously sprints don’t apply. . 

As Kim always says, this is a recovery ride and should be in the small chain
ring mostly, spinning & finishing at a 17-18 pace. 

If people want to go slower than 17-18 Mike Dalton has a great ride at 8:30
that is slower.

Really I think its just easier if we all start at the same time and
let the splits occur naturally.  But to do this people would have to
stop telling others to slow down and just let them go.  No one has to
ride as fast or as slow as the next guy and it just wont happen with a
group this diverse.
