This sounds quite wonderful. I wonder if I can snag a friend's hybrid for
this. I will look into it.

I would recommend spending a night in Galax, as motels are cheap and
there is almost always something going on (usually involving bluegrass
music) to keep you occupied. Its a nice relaxed place to be on a
weekend. Consider the Knights Inn, about $40 per night and plenty
clean and in good shape, just off Stuart Dr. Its not a dive. The
Rodeway Inn is also right in town, though I have not stayed there.
But it should be similar in pricing. Ice Bikes is the local shop
there. You can get on the trail from town, as its only about a mile
down the road (58/221). One possibility would be riding from town to
the trail spur, then about 25 miles out then flip. Enjoy the town on
Saturday evening, even go to the Blue Ridge Music Center on the
Parkway if you have an ear for bluegrass. On Sunday, you can drive to
the middle part, and ride to the end then flip, then drive back
home.

Cycling should be easy and relaxed, so there is no reason to spend
most of the day driving. Spend the night instead.

The trail bed is an old RR grade, and is now packed dirt and fine
gravel.
