Hey Jules, depending on what you are looking for there are some great options
out there. I know the stuff in the Raleigh area but there are good trails out
in Durham and Cary too.If you are looking for single track then trails like
Crabtree, Rocky Road and Beaver Dam are my favorite in the area. Of those 3,
Crabtree is probably the easiet with well maintained trails, decent obstacles
and 6 loops to ride. My favorite is Rocky Road (located off of Reedy Creek Rd
in Cary), it is more challenging than Crabtree from a technical standpoint and
there are some really good climbs in there too. Total length is 11.5 miles.
Beaver Dam is probably the toughest of those 3, it's further north just beyond
Falls Lake off of Hwy 50. I highly recommend the South Loop, it's about 9
miles of great riding. the If you're looking more for fitness riding on less
technical trails, then Umstead is great. There are plenty of long and/or steep
climbs (for this area) with nice wide trails. A full loop out there is just
short of 13 miles but I've done 60+ miles out there and not gotten bored (but
have been plenty exhausted).A few good sites for local trails
are:http://www.trianglemtb.com/index.phphttp://www.dirtworld.com/trails/traillist.asp?id=27One
thing to note, you mention not liking road. The North Raleigh Gyros is in
fact a road riding club. A bunch of us also ride mountain but our focus and
all of our rides are road. You may want to ping and join the TORC group. They
do all mountain biking and probably more of what you are looking for. Here's a
link. http://www.torc-nc.org/Good luck,-Kyle
