As long as you don't mind the sound of gunfire, the trails around Falls Lake are great. Eastern deer season for bow and arrows begins mid September and ends mid October. Muzzle loaders have one week in October. Gun season opens mid October through January 1st.
Hunting is prohibited at Umstead Park. (Except for poachers) You probably won't even see the hunters because of their camo gear. I've even traded deer sightings for venison.
