Subject: [Gyros: 17107] ASSAULT ON MT MITCHELL

I have a friend in South Carolina that wants me to do the Assault on
Mt Mitchell with him in May.  Some questions for my Gyros friends:

1.  Is the ride worth it?

Yes, Need to do it once and get the T-shirt

2.  He says that I have to join a bike club in SC to get a spot in the
race.  If you have done this, is this true?

Yes, they also sponsor training rides, etc to prepare

3.  How hard is this race?

Not a race, ride as hard and fast as you want.  Is it hard, sure.  As others
have said, the climbing comes after Marion so you have 75 miles in your legs
when you really start.  Most riders times are an even split between the portion
to Marion and the remainder.  For example, if it takes 4 hours to get to marion
then your ride time will be in the 8 hour range.

4.  Will riding Thursday and Saturday rides be enough to prepare for
this race?

Maybe.  Depends on how hard you are riding.  The climbing is extensive so
anything you can do to shed some weight (this coming from a guy well north of
200!) will help.  It also helps to set up your gearing to allow more spinning,
especially as the legs get tired.  The last portion, after turning into the
park
is tough with over 100 miles in the legs.

Thanks for any information.  Miss riding with you guys this year, but
plan to get back into the rides next year.
