I wonder if that red material was a very find brushed or sueded leather.
Leather breeches and jerkins were not unusual and of the few extant
examples I've seen some were buttery soft and had a slight nap. That
would certainly make the slashes easier--wouldn't have to finish any edges.
Of course, reproducing the bands would then be a problem. If they are
fabric over leather that might be hard to match color-wise and might
look odd, and if they are tooled leather that would be really difficult.
Unless it's embroidered leather. Can someone refresh my
memory--embroidery on soft leather--examples?

Thanks so much, this will be a major project once I
get underway - just trying to design the embossing on
that velvet will be a serious challenge.
