Anyone want to speculate on Future Wear? For instance will fear of
developing skin cancer return us to wearing natural fabric clothing that
covers more of the body with hats and gloves becoming expected wear?

While I won't speculate about future wear, the comment about wearing
cottons and other natural fiber clothing reminded me of something I found
recently while looking at the Rit Dye site online, and that is their Rit
Sunguard. http://www.ritdye.com/sun_guard/
"Rit® Sun GuardTMLaundry treatment works by putting a colorless agent into
clothing that absorbs UV rays so that they do not pass through your
clothes. You cant see it, feel it or smell it, but it works invisibly to
protect from the damaging UVA and UVB rays from the sun."
I am going to try this myself on my family's linen shifts and chemises for
faire (and some regular clothes as well). While most of our bodies are well
covered, I know our arms (when sleeves are off) and upper chest are not.
Handkerchief weight linen is rather transparent, so anything that helps
reduce burns on our bodies will be greatly appreciated. I should also add
this to my lightweight partlets as well, to reduce that odd-shaped tanned
breast area that tends to show up every summer after faires.
The company states that this product doesn't change the way material looks,
smells or feels, so it is worth a try in my book, especially since I live
in sunny central California where today we got 100+, and expecting hotter
the rest of the week. Needless to say I stay indoors a lot during the
summer, and we do wear hats outside.
And yes, I am a bit paranoid as a mom. I used to worship the sun when I was
a teen, and now wonder if that was a fatal mistake, that I don't want to
repeat with my kids. Thankfully, I rarely burned as I have oriental skin
that browned nicely, but the danger is worse today.
