They're on the same spectrum of ribbed fabrics. I'm not sure what the
"official" difference is, but from what I've seen, there's probably more
than one definition -- meaning one person's "faille" is another's
"bengaline." And ditto for "shantung."

Best to just ask for "a finely ribbed fabric" if you don't really care
what the label is and you're looking for the type/texture.

In my case, I bought my bengaline (faille? shantung?) off the discount
silk table at Vogue in Chicago in, hmm, 1988 or so, and I was just
looking for silk, not that particular weave necessarily.
