Since this event is in the context of the 1815 Battle of Plattsburgh,
New York (http://www.battleofplattsburgh.com/main.html) I was wondering
if I should be focusing on styles from a few years earlier. How up to
date do you think a well-to-do lady from New York, Philadelphia, or
Boston would be?

I agree that big city American women were very up to date--and probably not
so big city women tried to be, too. We have had some debates on the subject,
but I think American women, at least here in the Mid-Atlantic, looked more
to France than England, too. Friends could send fashion plates in letters.
In the very early 19th c., a man in New York subscribed to one of the
magazines and charged women a small fee to come in and see the fashion plates.

Many extant garments in collections show evidence of being re-modeled, often
likely to keep up with changing fashions.
