I am not sure this will work with wool, it does with linen.
 
Mist the fabric generously with clean water and put in a plastic bag for a 
couple of hours, then iron. The stay in the plastic will ensure that everything 
is damp.

I have a *clue* but no experience.

If hot water created them, maybe hot water can get them out. I think
trying to steam it at a drycleaners would be a good first step and after
that, maybe try the stove top again.
