My first guess would be some of the technological changes rather than any particular fashion style. Plastic-based fibers and other synthetics, lycra in everything. Modern chemical dyes - day-glo and neon colors. The complete shift to ready-to-wear clothing. Pants (by which I mean trousers, if you prefer British english) for women being acceptable (and common) is a pretty big shift too. But I can't really put my finger on an iconic style for the century - there's so much variety.
