Not exactly answering the question that was asked but...

I find it interesting what people choose to portray in different countries. In the UK, most people do something linked with where they are, or where they grew up, or perhaps a more distant family link. But the Americans and Australians I have met are more prepared to portray history from somewhere else entirely, doing Byzantine and Bulgarian medieval and all sorts. It seems that, because they don't have the [European] history of that time in their own country, they feel more free to just pick something they fancy.
